PESTICIDE SAFETY TRAINING FOR FIELDWORKERS AND HANDLERS

  Pesticide Safety Training:

  • Annual Training: Employers must provide annual training to employees working in or around treated fields on how to work safely with pesticides. 
  • Language and Method: Training must be conducted in a language and method that the employee understands. 
  • Training Content: The training should cover:
    • First aid and emergency decontamination procedures, including emergency eye flushing. 
    • How to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for hazard information and emergency medical treatment. 
    • How to obtain emergency medical care. 
    • Prevention, recognition, and first aid for heat-related illness. 
    • General safety practices when working with pesticides. 
  • New Pesticides: Training is also required anytime employees work with new pesticides. 
  • Written Training Program: Employers are required to have a written training program and individual training records for each employee handling pesticides. 
  • California Code of Regulations (CCR) Section 6764: This section covers fieldworker training requirements.
